Port of Spain Corporation compromised by cyberattack

Newsday TT published a post on November 5, 2020, about the cyber crime unit probing a cyber attack at POS Corporation.

According to Newsday, the Port of Spain Corporation indicated they are dealing with a cyberattack by ransomware similarly to the attack on Tatil Life Insurance. It is not known if the company has fallen victim to paying the ransom attack nor if it is resolved.

Key points

  • According to the corporation’s database administrator Colin Baldeosingh, there is an active investigation by the police’s cybercrime unit and foreign experts where hackers were able to encounter many confidential files, minutes of meetings, and financial information.
  • This hack compromised the company and resulted in a delay in payment of salaries for the staff last month. It is an active investigation, therefore, resulted in a lack of information provided.
  • However, the hack was similar to the ANSA MCAL TATIL life insurance company described as a “security incident” starting from the company in Barbados and then Trinidad and Tobago. The corporation plans to increase cybersecurity and secure backup data if there is a future attack.
