Tech News TT published a post on October 19, 2020, authored by Mark Lyndersay about ANSA MCAL reporting a Barbados’ “security incident”.
The Group Marketing Manager of ANSA MCAL stated that some of the company’s IT sectors were compromised by malware caused by cyber-terrorist group REvil. This “Security Incident” affected the TATIL insurance company which is described as a “moderate disruption in service” and therefore continues to serve their customers.
Key points
- Group Marketing Manager Rachel Pilgrim, says companies’ IT system was compromised, and ANSA MCAL rejected the questions the press had about the matter. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, some services to customers and clients were unavailable.
- A cybersecurity expert Eric Taylor proclaims that ANSA MCAL cybersecurity had been breached by the REvil gang who released the information out in the public, which he believes is caused by not paying the ransom. ANSA MCAL, therefore, acknowledged it as a “security incident” which had affected their TATIL Life insurance company.
- ANSA MCAL further explained that they are working through the restoration process from the attack and taking measures to ensure the integrity of its system with the assistance of international resources.
- REvil has been operating since June 2020. By encrypting documents, threatening companies that they would either sell the information in an auction or the company can pay a ransom. According to Eric Taylor, the REvil group had claimed the credit for the ANSA MCAL ransomware attack.
- There are some decryption keys for some ransomware software available at the NoMoreRansom website but there is none currently created for REvil/Sodinokibi. However, the Trinidad and Tobago Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (TT-CSIRT) urges local companies to be aware of the cybersecurity threats and providing few countermeasures and if need be contact them or the police.
