Why Do Data Brokers Access the Australian Electoral Roll?

The Australian electoral roll is meant to be a tightly controlled batch of data. It’s only available to political parties, approved medical researchers and electoral researchers. The government also bans commercial use of electoral data in the U.S., but many states do not prohibit commercial use. Afterpay, a popular short-term loan service, reportedly accessed the data via credit agency service provider Illion, formerly known as Dun & Bradstreet. The report says that not only Illion but numerous other companies have access to electoral roll data, including Betfair and Acxiom.”]
