‘WannaCry Hero’ Avoids Jail Time in Kronos Malware Charges

Marcus Hutchins sentenced to time served and one year of supervised release. The 25-year-old British researcher was indicted in 2017 and charged with writing the Kronos malware. Hutchins has been hailed as a hero for his part in stopping the global WannaCry outbreak in May 2017. The malware was a banking trojan first discovered in 2014 that is capable of stealing credentials and using web injects for banking websites. The sentencing of Hutchins, known for his online Twitter name and blog MalwareTech, has drawn international interest.
