VA Chief Calls for Stronger Data Laws

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary James Nicholson told Congress that the huge theft of veteran data at his agency in May is a sure signal that “teeth” need to be added to federal data security laws. Nicholson told the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform that there is a system in place for background checks for those who will have access to confidential information, but not for those with access to massive amounts of personal data. He said the incident prompted him to weigh changes to a law called the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002.”]
