U.S. Coast Guard Issues Safety Alert Following Cyber Incident

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a marine safety alert including cybersecurity guidance following a cyber incident experienced by a deep draft vessel during February which affected the ship’s entire network. The Coast Guard also released a Marine Safety Information Bulletin (MSIB) on May 24 about cyber adversaries targeting commercial vessels via malware intrusion attempts and email phishing attacks. Among the updated cybersecurity best practices suggested for all commercial vessels as part of the newly released maritime safety alert, the Coast guard recommends [PDF]: implementing network segmentation to “make it harder for an adversary to gain access to essential systems and equipment”””
