The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed fines totaling US$3.3 million against the current and former operators of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The DOE notified the University of California on July 13 that it intends to fine the university $3 million, which would be the largest civil penalty ever assessed by the agency. It also is proposing a $300,000 fine against the company jointly owned by the university, Bechtel National and two other firms. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman ordered LANS to take specific actions to bolster physical and IT security at the lab.”]
