An electric field is being installed in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal coast to protect swimmers from sharks. The prototype system, dubbed the Shark POD, will be installed off Glencairn beach until next April. The system is assembled by stringing a 328-foot cable between a series of risers affixed to the seabed and turning it on. If successful, it will provide the basis to develop a barrier system that can protect bathers without killing or harming sharks or any other marine animals.”]
