The Week in Ransomware – April 12th 2019 – Targeting Reveton

The biggest news was the announcement that the UK has jailed one of the distributors of the Reveton ransomware. This type of ransomware was a plague in 2012 through 2015 where it would lock out users from their computer while pretending to be a notice from a government law enforcement agency. A decryptor for the Planetary Ransomware family was released by Emsisoft this week that allows victims to decrypt their files for free. An Android application which steals PayPal credentials, encrypts files from the device’s external storage was spotted in the Google Play Store by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko.
