Many advanced persistent threat groups’ monikers are not arbitrary names, but are tied to attributes of the groups behind cyberattacks. Security firms tend to have their own naming conventions, meaning there will be multiple aliases for any given APT group. Security experts say it’s difficult to determine the exact entity behind an APT. Many APT groups are often given names, with a nod to the geography they re thought to be associated with, such as Panda, Lotus, Panda, Panda and Panda.
