Taiwanese firms are chipping away at the market shares of giants such as Apple and Nokia. HTC sold 24.67 million smartphones under its own brand last year, more than double the number in 2009. HTC made its name when Microsoft enlisted it to make smartphones based on its Windows Mobile operating system.
