Nigerian cybercriminal group dubbed Scattered Canary has evolved from Craigslist and romance scams to business email compromise (BEC) scams and credit card fraud. The Agari Cyber Intelligence Division (ACID) tracked down the Nigerian group for two months. BEC attacks have seen an explosive 476% growth between Q4 2017 and Q4 2018. The group’s focus on BEC scams closely follows a trend revealed by FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center in its 2018 Internet Crime Report which reveals that cybercriminals were able to grab $1,2 billion in profits by targeting wire transfer payments.
