Scammer Tricks City Into $1 Million Wire Transfer

A scammer impersonated the Chief Financial Officer of Allan Construction, a company contracted for the rehabilitation of a bridge in Saskatoon, Canada. The city fell victim to classic business email compromise (BEC) fraud, also known as email account compromise (EAC) The FBI last week arrested a perpetrator that was part of a group responsible for stealing almost $11 million from the export sales office for Caterpillar industrial and farming equipment. The FBI warns that romance scam victims are often recruited as unwitting money mules for the perpetrators.
