Rethinking Responsibilities and Remedies in Social-Engineering Attacks

In 2019, cyberthreats on the rise and breaches increasing in both frequency and magnitude, says John Avlon. Avlon: Are we comfortable that our defenses are so brittle that they can be shattered with one errant click? Social-engineering attacks give attackers a surprising amount of leverage over their targets, Avlon says. Social-media sites also offer attackers effective reconnaissance tools that are difficult to prevent or detect, he says. The phishing attack on Hillary Clinton s campaign manager, John Podesta, is perhaps the most spectacular example of successful social engineering.
