Hackers initiated $4.4 million in fraudulent money transfers via SWIFT interbank messaging service last month. Attackers reportedly struck the bank during Tihar – aka Deepawali – a five-day Hindu festival and one of Nepal’s biggest holidays. Nepal’s central bank, Nepal Rastra Bank, was able to recover $3.9 million, although $580,000 had already been released to overseas bank accountholders. More than 11,000 financial institutions across 200 countries and territories use SWIFT to transfer funds.”]
