Ransomware Claims To Sniff Out Porn For The Police

Microsoft has identified four variants of a ransomware scheme that impersonates law enforcement agencies. Ransomware is packaged in e-mail messages that purport to come from a number of institutions. Once installed on the victim s computer, the program encrypts or deletes the data stored on the hard drive. Victims are advised to wire the money to supposed authorities via a legitimate online payment services. The latest attack suggests that cybercriminals are broadening the scope of their activities to include other geographic regions.
