The Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday that more than 750,000 port workers will be required to have ID cards. Applicants will need to prove that they are legally working in the United States, and have not been convicted of any terrorism-related crimes such as spying, sedition or treason. Industry leaders are worried that the new restrictions could disqualify thousands of workers and that employees with criminal records, or those who have paid fines, might lose their jobs.
