Poor Password Security Led to Recent Water Treatment Facility Hack

Unidentified cyber actors accessed a Florida water treatment facility’s SCADA system via TeamViewer software. Unidentified hackers accessed the system via 32-bit versions of the Windows 7 operating system. Windows 7 reached end-of-life as of last year, on January 14, 2020. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also issued additional guidance when using the software, urging organizations to configure the service to “manual start” and refrain from using unattended access features.
