Memcached Servers Deliver Amplified DDoS Attacks

Memcached is an open source distributed caching system that can be used to amplify DDoS attacks. DDoS defense firm Akamai reported seeing multiple attacks, including one on Wednesday against its customer GitHub that hit 1.3 terabits per second. The Feb. 28 DDoS attack against GitHub peaked at 1.5 Tbps. An update for memcached has been released that disables UDP by default, but it’s not clear how many users have downloaded and installed the update. The attack can be easily mitigated without a dedicated solution to the dedicated DDoS mitigation.”]
