IRS Warns of Rise in Phishing Attempts

The IRS has received more than 400 complaints about phishing attempts since the start of last year. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has been notified of some 1,500 cases since last fall. Phishing e-mails typically tell recipients that a refund is owed and direct that person to a fake site. The addresses of the fake e-mail sometimes even include irs.gov to further convince recipients of their legitimacy. The IRS is sounding its alarm in response to the escalating number of fraudulent emails.”]
