Hacker wiping unprotected MongoDB installs and holding data for ransom

A hacker is wiping open MongoDB instances with a ransom note. Victor Gevers has been notifying owners of exposed MongoDB servers for years. Gevers said a hacker going by Harak1r1 was responsible for wiping the database contents and leaving behind the ransom. Some of the victims have been paying the ransom to recover the data. The ransom demand is currently about $219.2 BTC, and there are now “nearly 2,000 instances affected with MongoDB ransomware””]
