Hacker “BestBuy” Admits to Hijacking Deutsche Telekom Routers With Mirai Malware

A 29-year-old German hacker known as BestBuy pleaded guilty to hijacking over 900,000 Deutsche Telekom routers. He used a custom version of the Mirai IoT malware that he modified himself to make the routers go offline. BestBuy said he was hired by a Liberian ISP to carry out DDoS attacks on local competitors. The hacker’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for next Friday, July 28. A German judge sentenced BestBuy to a year and eight months suspended prison sentence.
