EFF: Forget cookies, your browser has fingerprints

Even without cookies, Web sites get a unique picture of their visitors about 94 percent of the time. Configuration information can be compiled by Web sites to create a unique portrait of most visitors. This means that most Internet users are a lot less anonymous than they believe, says Electronic Frontier Foundation technologist. A handful of companies have already started offering this kind of Web tracking to help e-commerce sites identify fraudsters. Gartner analyst: Browser fingerprinting may see more widespread use as browser-makers give users more control over managing Web-tracking cookie files.”]
