Diaspora is a “privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all distributed open source social network” Four NYU students have raised $10,000 on Kickstarter to start building the service. Every user will have their own encrypted, customizable “node” on the network. Personal data will reside on that user’s computer, as opposed to a centralized hub.
