Peiter Zatko, a longtime researcher and hacker, is leaving Google to start a cyber UL. The cyber UL would be a cyber version of Underwriters Laboratory. Zatsko is one of the members of the L0pht hacker collective that formed in Boston in the 1990s. The idea for something along the lines of this project took shape back then in 1999, a paper describing a possible model for a cyber UL in 1999. The paper describes a key problem in the security industry: No one has a good way to prove the claims made by vendors.
