Cyber Crime Bill passed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Teresa Mioli published a blog on August 8, 2016 titled “St. Vincent and the Grenadines passes Cybercrime Bill that allows prison sentences for online defamation”.

This blog speaks about a cybercrime bill that was passed on August 12 however it received criticism from opposition, international and regional freedom organizations.

Key points from this article:

  • Grenada passed a similar cybercrime bill but had to make amendment due to international criticism.
  • Delphine Halgand, Director of Reporters Without Borders was concerned about the criteria used to determine whether someone’s private affairs were exposed.
  • Gonsalves responded to the organization that amendments had been made to the clause, saying “the offence of criminal defamation is not a fetter on professional, independent journalists,” and that it does protect citizens who are victims of deliberate defamation.
  • Final version of the cybercrime law is now available.
