CopyCat Malware Infected 14M Android Devices, Rooted 8M, in 2016

The CopyCat malware infected 14 million Android devices and rooted more than half of them, researchers say. Researchers say the malware, dubbed CopyCat, helped its authors earn $1.5 million from April to May 2016. Asia accounted for 55 percent of CopyCat infections, Africa at 18 percent, according to researchers. The malware never made it to Google s Play marketplace, but did spread via popular apps repackaged with CopyCat and available for download on third-party app stores.
