The Cayman Islands Data Protection Law provides a framework of rights and duties designed to give individuals greater control over their personal, in line with principles found in other laws around the globe.
- The Data Protection Law (DPL), which was published in June 2017 is now in effect since September 30, 2019. In this Act are requirements for the protection of personal data and is centred upon eight data protection principles.
- The DPL includes concepts from the EU General Data Protection Regulation. GDPR includes personal data processing limitations and data breach notification obligations.
- A Data Controller is a party that controls and administers the flow of data, specifically personal data on behalf of another entity. If a data controller is not established in the Cayman Islands, then they must nominate a representative who is established in the Cayman Islands.
- The Office of the Ombudsman will enforce the DPL.
