Australia’s House of Representatives has passed the “Telecommunications Assistance and Access Bill 2018” The new law would allow law enforcement to force Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, WhatsApp and other tech giants to help them access encrypted communications. The new legislation is expected to come into effect immediately during the next session of parliament in early 2019. It remains to be seen whether and how tech companies cooperate with the new laws with the Australian government. The Bill says tech companies can’t be compelled to weaken encryption or introduce a “systemic weakness” into their legit software or hardware.
