The International Press Institute (IPI) published a post on Aug 16, 2016, about St. Vincent and the Grenadines adopting a Cyber Crime law.
Here are the key points:
- There is a concern that the law imposes on human rights.
- The law broadens on existing criminal defamation, provisions to include cyberbullying and cyber harassment.
- Slandering across any media is punishable for up to two years, but now the new legislation adds online media sources to the list.
- The issue of criminal defamation has particular importance in the Caribbean, where a similar law was adopted in Grenada.
- Trinidad and Tobago are now considering similar legislation.
- It is now viewed that the law must be revised and criminal deformation strip from it.
