Witnesses to be protected under Jamaica’s NIDS

Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck has assured the Office of the Public Defender that the necessary identity protection for persons operating under the Justice Protection Programme (JPP) will be retained under the National Identification and Registration (or NIDS) Bill. The Bill says that a reliable database of all Jamaican citizens will be created, and the programme will involve the issuance of a unique lifelong national identification number to every person living in Jamaica. Public Defender Arlene Harrison Henry said that there is concern that identity information could be released on an agreement between authorities and the administrative centre.
