Why a Russian Journalist Faked His Own Murder and What Happens Now

Russian war correspondent Arkady Babchenko was widely reported to have been shot outside his apartment in Kiev, Ukraine. But the next day, he showed up at a press conference, undeniably alive. Ukrainian authorities say they arranged the made-up murder in an apparently successful effort to catch criminals who really did intend to kill Babchenko. The audacious scheme has since raised concerns from other prominent Russian journalists. Many Moscow-based journalists say the plot may further erode trust in the media and provoke the Russian government.
