Watchdog: Energy Department not doing enough to protect grid against cyber attacks

Government Accountability Office report found that the Department of Energy has not done enough to protect the electrical grid against increasing cyber attack attempts. The report also found that while the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved mandatory grid cybersecurity standards, these do not fully encompass current federal guidance on grid cybersecurity. The GAO report was released the same day that the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved several pieces of legislation meant to bolster DOEs work on grid security. The bills approved included the Enhancing Grid Security Through Public-Private Partnerships Act, which would require DOE to establish and carry out a program to assess the cyber and physical security of electric utilities.”]
