Used Computer GSM Card Security

TL;DR

You’ve got a used computer with a working GSM card. This guide helps you secure it by checking what software is installed, updating everything, removing unnecessary programs, and adding security software. We also cover basic network safety.

Securing Your Used Computer with a GSM Card

  1. Initial Assessment: What’s Installed?
    • Open the Control Panel (search for it in Windows).
    • Go to ‘Programs and Features’. This shows you all installed software.
    • Look for anything unfamiliar or suspicious. Note down what you find – we’ll deal with it later.
  2. Check the GSM Card Software
    • Find any software specifically related to the GSM card (often in ‘Programs and Features’ as well).
    • Note the name and version of this software. You’ll need it for updates.
    • If you don’t know what it does, search online for the software name + “security” or “review”.
  3. Windows Updates: Essential First Step
    • Search for ‘Windows Update’ and open it.
    • Click ‘Check for updates’. Install all available updates, including optional ones. This patches security holes.
    • Restart your computer when prompted.
  4. Update Your Software
    • For each program you identified in Step 1 (especially the GSM card software), check for updates.
      • Most programs have a ‘Help’ menu with an ‘About’ or ‘Check for Updates’ option.
      • Alternatively, visit the software’s official website and download the latest version.
  5. Remove Unnecessary Programs
    • Go back to ‘Programs and Features’ (Control Panel).
    • Uninstall anything you don’t need or recognise.
      • Be careful! Don’t uninstall programs if you’re unsure what they do. Search online first.
  6. Install Antivirus Software
    • Download a reputable antivirus program (e.g., Windows Defender, Avast, Bitdefender). Many are free for basic protection.
    • Run a full system scan after installation.
  7. Install Anti-Malware Software
    • Download and install anti-malware software (e.g., Malwarebytes). This catches things antivirus might miss.

    • Run a scan after installation.
  8. Firewall Check
    • Windows Firewall should be enabled by default.
      • Search for ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ and open it.
      • Make sure the firewall is turned on for both private and public networks.
  9. Network Safety: Wi-Fi Security
    • If you use Wi-Fi, make sure your network is password protected with a strong password (WPA2 or WPA3).
    • Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks without using a VPN.
  10. Change Default Passwords
    • If the GSM card software has any default passwords, change them immediately.
(Check the software's documentation for instructions)
  11. Regular Backups
    • Back up your important files regularly to an external hard drive or cloud storage. This protects you from data loss if something goes wrong.
