US lawmaker asks FTC to probe implications of Facebook ‘big data’ experiment

Senator Mark R. Warner of Virginia has asked the FTC to look at the use of big data by Facebook and other Internet companies. Warner wants to know whether the Facebook experiment violates FTC’s consent agreement with the company and section 5 of FTC Act prohibits ”unfair or deceptive acts or practices” The senator is not in favor of increased federal regulation, recommending instead industry self-regulation to address public concerns. Facebook: “We want to do better in the future and are improving our process based on this feedback””]
