UK ANPR systems are one of the worlds biggest surveillance systems

The automatic number plate recognition systems (ANPR) used by the UK police are one of the largest surveillance systems in the world. There are currently 8,300 ANPR cameras that every day collect the data related to 25-35 million read records. These records are sent to the National ANPR Data Centre, but there isnt any legal framework governing this process, that clearly represent a mass data collection. The Home Office says ANPR is just another tool in the policing toolkit and does not require a statutory authority.”]
