U.S. Medical ID Theft Cost Jumps To $41 Billion

45 percent of medical ID theft victims end up paying their health-care provider or insurer for charges incurred by the thieves. Half of the victims say they know the person who victimized them, and 31 percent allow family members to use their IDs to get medical services. Some 2 million Americans fall victim to medical identity theft every year, according to the Ponemon Institute’s Third Annual National Study on Medical Identity Theft. Nearly 60 percent of the survey respondents say they don’t ever check their medical records for fraud.”]
