Twitter Apologizes for Repurposing Phone Numbers

Twitter apologized for repurposing phone numbers provided by users for security features for use in targeted advertising. “We’re very sorry this happened and are taking steps to make sure we dont make a mistake like this again,” Twitter says in a blog post. The move comes just three months after Facebook received a $5 billion fine from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for a range of transgressions, including using phone numbers used for security for targeted ads. Twitter doesn’t reveal to advertisers the contact information it has collected, but it could be a violation of Europes General Data Protection Regulation.”]
