Tracking Common Causes of Recent Health Data Breaches

The biggest health data breaches added to the federal tally so far this year are classified as “hacking/IT incidents” These incidents include ransomware and phishing attacks, as well as misconfigured IT. Business associates were reported to be involved in more than a quarter of the major health data breach incidents. The largest breach, involving 974,000 individuals, exposed the protected health information of nearly 975,000 people for several weeks late last year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ website lists major breaches affecting 500 or more individuals.”]
