The Week in Ransomware – July 3rd 2020 – Yes, Macs need antivirus

This week a new ransomware called ThiefQuest was discovered that was distributed through pirated software on Torrent sites. The malware would also steal numerous files, including certificates, documents, text files, source code, and cryptocurrency wallets. UCSF’s announcement that they paid $1.14 million to Netwalker for a decryptor is also big news this week. WastedLocker campaigns targeting US news outlets and UCSF paying ransom for decryptor. A hacker group going by the name of ‘Cl0ud SecuritY’ is breaking into old LenovoEMC (formerly Iomega) network-attached storage (NAS) devices, wiping files and asking owners to pay between $200 and $275 to get their data back.
