Antigua and Barbuda released its Data Protection Act of 2013. Here’s a quick summary just for you.
This act was created to promote the protection of data both public and private, along with outlining how incidents should be dealt with, all enacted by the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda.
This document is divided into five sections, each covering a different agenda.
- Part I / Preliminary- here we find clear definitions of the terms used in the act. Along with its objectives.
- Part II / Privacy and data protection principles- this contains the basic do’s and don’ts of handling and protecting data under this act.
- Part III / Rights of data subjects- this is a detailed section on the rights of bodies, both public and private who own the data. You can also find the terms at which its use is acceptable.
- Part IV / Exemptions- here, we find provisions that are exempted from the act. This means that within certain conditions, the Act may not be accepted.
- Part V / Information commissioner and miscellaneous provisions- this is where we find general information like penalties and regulations.
This document can be used as a guide for the handling of data along with the process of dealing with its misuse.
