Sysadmin Gets 18 Months in Prison for Shutting Down Former Employer’s Network

Joe Vito Venzor, 41, from El Paso, Texas, was sentenced this week to 18 months in prison for hacking and destroying the IT network of his former employee on the day he was let go. He accessed the company’s network using a backdoor account he created weeks before being let go from his job at Lucchese Bootmaker. The company’s production came to a halt one hour after the incident, and 300 employees were sent home for the day. Authorities tied him to the hack when they found log entries for the “elplaser”” backdoor account tied to his work laptop.”
