Storage services are embedded in SAN infrastructure instead of on the storage controller. This approach has been tried for several years but it has seen limited acceptance by users. Infrastructure vendors should focus on more basic blocking and tackling of storage services, says George Crump. He says the switch would also be a great place to embed SSD caching techniques like those we discussed in our automated tiering series.
