The European Union has released a report on the security of 5G networks. The report says the proliferation of software within the network is one of the top security challenges facing the next generation of mobile networks. 5G is fundamentally different than prior wireless networks in that they are largely software-defined and virtualized. This vastly expands the attack surface and the possibility for the emergence of rafts of exploitable vulnerabilities throughout the architecture. The EU and the U.S. need to focus on setting their own interoperable standards, diversifying supply chains, report says.
