Malicious text messages can crash many types of mobile phones, including devices by Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG, according to a presentation given at the Chaos Communication Congress hacking conference this week in Berlin. The attacks were outlined by Collin Mulliner, a security researcher at the Technical University in Berlin and his colleague, Nico Golde. After establishing a GSM network in their lab, the two sent thousands of messages to a variety of phones. Some phones had their calls interrupted during testing, others got disconnected from their network and some phones were bricked, or rendered inoperative.
