Fayval Williams, Minister of Energy and Technology, expresses concern at the recent rise in fraudulent emails requesting payment. During her presentation at the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Hilton Resort and Spa in St James on Tuesday, Williams reported that with seven months into the year 2019, the GOJ data showed a spike in the receipt of fraudulent emails demanding payment.

- In reviewing local developments in Cyber Security, Williams indicated that data submitted to the Jamaica Cyber Incident Response Team (JaCIRT) showed a spike in incidents related to debit cards, sales terminals and social media fraud, and cyberbullying.
- She added that there have also been continuous malware infections with a particular emphasis on Ransomware. Malware is a name used to describe malicious software that enters a network through a vulnerability – usually when a user clicks a dangerous connection or email attachment and then installs harmful software.
- The US Embassy received praise from the Minister for organizing the cyber security and Cybercrime Workshop, which aims to take measures to improve strategy, legislation, and regional partnerships.
