Tech support scammers have made nearly $1.5 billion off of 3.3 million unwitting victims just this year. Scammers convince victims into allowing them access to his/her computer through remote control applications such as TeamViewer. They then present benign processes as malicious, or at times even spread malware themselves, then charge hundreds of dollars for the service. The scamming network employs multiple websites and VOIP phone numbers to carry out their duplicitous activities. In order to analyze the scammer’s activities, we set up a dedicated virtual machine and had an analyst feigning a low level of technical proficiency call the number.”]
