Report: Social Security Numbers Easy to Guess

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say Social Security numbers can be easily guessed. Using just a birth date and state of birth, researchers were able to predict most of an individual’s nine-digit Social Security number. The findings will also be presented at the BlackHat 2009 conference in Las Vegas later this month. The Social Security Administration’s Death Master File is a public database with social Security numbers, dates of birth and death, and states of birth for every deceased beneficiary. The researchers note that the predictability of the numbers now make them obsolete for authentication purposes.”]
