Ransomware Payments: Where Have All the Bitcoins Gone?

Ransomware is a billion-dollar industry, although no one knows for sure. A new study finds at least $16 million in ransoms was paid by 19,750 victims in two years. South Korea appeared to be a disproportionately affected locale, with $2.5 million in payments alone going to Cerber. The most popular destination for bitcoins was BTC-e, a Russian exchange that shut down in July. Bitcoin transactions are pseudonymous: payments are made from one 32-character address to another.”]
