Google is accelerating plans to encrypt all of its data moving between its global data centers. The company has been moving in the direction of encrypting most of its user-facing resources for a long time now, including Google search, Gmail and other products. Leaked documents show the NSA has a long-term program in place that focuses on subverting and breaking encryption protocols, such as SSL/TLS, the main protocol used to protect Internet communications. It’s also possible that the NSA, which employs thousands of mathematicians and cryptographers, has made a significant advance that gives it the ability to decrypt some portion of protected communications.
